According to the Times of Israel, Yemen’s Houthi movement carried out a ballistic missile strike targeting southern Israel early Saturday, setting off warning sirens in Beersheba and nearby locations.
The incident marks the first attack by the Iran-aligned group since the outbreak of the ongoing war involving Iran, signaling a potential expansion of the conflict beyond its current fronts.
In a statement issued afterward, the Houthis accepted responsibility for the strike, declaring that they had aimed at “sensitive Israeli military sites” using what they described as a “barrage of ballistic missiles.”
Despite this claim, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) clarified that only a single missile was launched from Yemen and confirmed it was intercepted successfully by Israeli air defense systems before it could reach its intended target.
The development came just one day after the group issued a stern warning about possible military escalation.
The Houthis had indicated they were ready to step into the conflict if additional countries chose to support the United States and Israel in their campaign against Iran.
They also cautioned against the use of the Red Sea as a strategic corridor for launching attacks targeting the Islamic Republic.
Reinforcing that warning, the group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, spoke in a televised address on Friday night.
He stressed the group’s readiness to respond, stating, “We confirm that our fingers are on the trigger for direct military intervention if any new alliances join Washington and Israel against Iran and its allies, or if the Red Sea is used for hostile operations against Iran.”
