Funke Egbemode, a Nigerian journalist, has recounted a disturbing encounter with a well-dressed man who was caught urinating in a drainage near her home in Lagos. The incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, has sparked conversations about public decency and respect for communal spaces in Nigeria.
According to the statement publish by Nigerian Tribune, the incident happened after she returned from attending the 2026 edition of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation Annual Lecture in Ikenne. Exhausted from hours spent in traffic, she was shocked to see the man relieving himself at the turning to her house. Expressing her frustration, she shouted through her car window: “Next time you pee near my house like that, I’ll make sure you never pee again!”
The journalist admitted that while her words startled the man, she also recognized the absurdity of her threat. “How exactly was I going to make him stop? It was more of an instinctive reaction than a practical plan,” she said. Her driver reportedly found the situation amusing and burst into laughter, which further heightened her mix of embarrassment and anger.
Egbemode used the incident to highlight broader social issues in Nigeria, particularly regarding public behavior and civic responsibility. “Would anyone behave like this in America or Dubai? In those countries, public decency is enforced strictly. Here, unfortunately, people sometimes act as if basic courtesy does not matter,” she observed.
The episode also served as a reflection on the daily challenges faced by residents in urban areas, where traffic congestion, stress, and inconsiderate behavior often combine to create moments of frustration. For Egbemode, the incident was a reminder of how minor acts of disrespect can become symbolic of larger societal issues.
The journalist’s account was reported by Nigerian Tribune, shedding light on the need for increased awareness and enforcement of public conduct to ensure that shared spaces are respected by all citizens…..See More
