Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has spoken out following the violent gunmen attack in Benin City, Edo State, condemning the incident as a dangerous sign of Nigeria’s democratic decline, according to report by Vanguard on Tuesday February 24th 2026.
The attack reportedly occurred at the residence of former APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where armed men opened fire, riddling the gate with bullets and damaging several vehicles.
Obi, in a video that has circulated online, expressed deep concern over the assault, stressing that the attack on a former governor’s home reflects the worsening insecurity and intimidation that now threaten Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He warned that such acts of violence cannot be tolerated, insisting that terrorism and political intimidation are eroding the foundations of governance.
Obi stated,
“I assure you this cannot continue; we have a country, and we are a part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising the citizens.”
The incident took place shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political leaders attended the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin.
Video footage from the scene revealed multiple bullet holes on the estate gate and several damaged vehicles, underscoring the intensity of the attack…..See More
