Taliban Signals Willingness to Join Forces With Iran in Event of US Attack

According to an Iran International English report of Sunday 15 of February 2026, the chief spokesperson for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, has indicated that it would be prepared to co-operate with Iran if Washington were to launch a military attack.

Speaking on Sunday, Mujahid said that Kabul would consider co-ordination with Tehran under specific circumstances. His comments were made during an interview with the Radio Iran, Pashto Service, where he outlined the Taliban’s position on regional security and potential conflict involving the United States (US).

Mujahid stated that, in the event of an attack on Iran, Afghanistan’s ruling authorities would be ready to act in support of the Islamic Republic if assistance were formally requested. He framed the issue as a matter of regional solidarity, emphasizing that co-operation would depend on the nature of the situation and the request from Tehran.

The Taliban spokesman also addressed recent regional developments, referring to the June conflict between Iran and Israel. He said that Tehran had emerged victorious from what he described as a 12-day war with Israel, and expressed confidence that Iran would withstand any future confrontation. According to Mujahid, Iran’s experience in that conflict demonstrated its ability to defend itself and prevail against external pressure.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, as speculation continues over the possibility of direct military action by the US. While no such attack has been announced, statements from regional actors reflect growing concern over the potential consequences for neighboring countries.

The Taliban’s comments indicates its effort to position Afghanistan as an actor attentive to regional dynamics, following its return to power. Since taking control of the country, the group has sought to manage relations with neighbouring states, including Iran, which shares a long border with Afghanistan and maintains significant political and economic interests in the country.
