US Senator Lindsey Graham has renewed his call for regime change in Iran, cautioning that stepping back at this moment would amount to “the biggest mistake we’ve made.” He also disclosed significant concern in Washington about projecting weakness after signaling to Iranian demonstrators that “help is on the way.”
In an interview aired by Forbes Breaking News, Graham spoke on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where he delivered a forceful critique of Tehran’s leadership. A longstanding critic of the Iranian government, he contended that the current leadership is at its most vulnerable point since 1979. Graham maintained that pursuing “regime change” through military means should remain a serious consideration, framing it as a credible strategic path rather than rhetorical posturing.
He argued that withdrawing support now would carry consequences more damaging than past foreign policy setbacks, including the Syria “red line” episode and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Outlining what he described as Tehran’s ideological ambitions, Graham said, “Iran wants three things to purify Islam. Sunni Islam will go if it were up to the Ayatollah. They want to destroy Israel.”
