In a recent interview on TV Platinum, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju criticized former Nasir El-Rufai, alleging authoritarian tendencies during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
Adeyanju declared, “El-Rufai wanted to arrest Professor Chidi Odinkalu for criticizing him,” highlighting what he described as a pattern of intimidation against dissenting voices under El-Rufai’s administration. He recounted multiple instances where critics, activists, and journalists faced harassment or detention for expressing opposition to government policies, suggesting a broader culture of impunity.
The activist argued that such behavior reflects a misunderstanding of power, noting that public office is a responsibility, not a personal inheritance or monarchical privilege. Adeyanju emphasized that governance should respect human rights and democratic principles, including freedom of speech and protection of dissenting opinions.
While acknowledging the legal principle of presumption of innocence, Adeyanju insisted that public officials must be prepared to answer for their actions, particularly regarding alleged abuses of authority and mismanagement of security in Kaduna State. He called on relevant agencies such as the EFCC and DSS to investigate all allegations impartially and without political interference.
Adeyanju concluded by stressing that accountability strengthens democracy and that no leader, regardless of rank or influence, should act above the law.
