Prominent pastor, author and relationship expert Dr Olumide Oladapo Emmanuel has shared a glimpse into the flexible division of household duties in his marriage, challenging traditional gender expectations in Nigerian homes.
Speaking in episode of The Morayo Show hosted by Morayo Afolabi-Brown on YouTube, Dr Emmanuel appeared alongside his wife, Chief Mrs Adenike Olumide-Emmanuel, as part of a Valentine’s-themed series featuring celebrity couples.
The couple discussed their long-standing union and how they have built a practical partnership that works for their family.
Dr Emmanuel explained that his wife manages the family’s laundry. Even though they own a washing machine, she combines machine cycles with hand washing.
He takes responsibility for most of the ironing, with her assisting only occasionally. In the kitchen, he performs the majority of the cooking, although she is also a capable cook.
He noted that visitors might arrive to find her relaxing in front of the television while he prepares meals, a scene that could lead some observers to assume she has used supernatural influence to shift roles in her favour.
He stressed that such moments represent only one side of their household routine.
At other times, guests could see his wife standing on a table to change a light bulb while he attends to different tasks, prompting the opposite assumption that he is being taken advantage of.
The pastor described these arrangements as part of their unique family dynamics, built on mutual understanding rather than fixed rules.
He said: “My wife washes our clothes. We have a washing machine, but she washes with both the washing machine and her hands, while I do the ironing. She doesn’t iron; she only irons once in a while. And then when it comes to cooking, she knows how to cook, but I do most of the cooking. If you come to my house, you may see my wife watching TV while I’m in the kitchen cooking, and you may be thinking that she has used juju on me. But if you come to our house another time, you may see her on the table changing a bulb, while somewhere else I’m not even thinking that this man is wicked. So it’s our family dynamics. I even do school runs.
