According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday 7 February, 2026, a United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has pushed back against reports suggesting Washington is considering a plan to divide Nigeria, calling the claims unfounded.
Moore addressed the issue in a statement released on Saturday, following his recent visit to Nigeria. He confirmed that he had been in the country and held several meetings with senior government officials. However, according to him, none of those conversations veered anywhere near discussions about breaking up the country. In his words, “dividing the country has not come up in any serious way”.
Instead, the senator said the focus of his engagements was on security and stability, particularly the impact of violence on vulnerable communities. He warned that any attempt to encourage separatist movements would have serious consequences, especially for Christian populations in the North and the Middle Belt, who already face persistent threats.
And beyond internal tensions, Moore argued that a weakened or fragmented Nigeria would create wider regional dangers. Such instability, he noted, could give extremist groups more room to operate, worsening insecurity not just within Nigeria but across Africa as a whole.
He added that his interest in Nigeria is driven by concern for human lives. Moore said he remains committed to supporting efforts that protect Christians and, more broadly, all Nigerians affected by ongoing terrorist violence.
The lawmaker also pointed to recent progress between Abuja and Washington. He highlighted a newly signed security cooperation agreement between the two countries, describing it as a meaningful step toward confronting violence and strengthening ties between both nations.
