Chidi Odinkalu, a well-known advocate for human rights and the former chair of the national human rights commission, has recently expressed his views following the indictment of ex-attorney general Abubakar Malami for his intentional failure to prosecute those funding terrorism. In remarks shared on his official X account, he outlined why the allegations ought to be retracted immediately.
It is already common knowledge that the prior attorney general and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, is confronted with multiple charges regarding his actions and lack of actions during his tenure.
Nevertheless, while many perceive his situation as influenced by political motives and anticipate the charges to be dismissed, Chidi Odinkalu, a distinguished human rights attorney, has highlighted a concerning accusation against him.
In his statements released on his official X account, he emphasized the risks linked to the new charge of not prosecuting financiers of terrorism that were brought to his attention during his time in office.
Chidi Odinkalu, who is highly regarded for calling for accountability, asserted that this charge is very severe but is devoid of legal foundation; thus, it should be dismissed to avoid setting a negative example.
However, he clarified that his recommendation to drop the charge does not stem from any fondness for Abubakar Malami but rather from a desire to uphold the integrity of the attorney general’s position.
According to Chidi Odinkalu, one can only wish for the rule of law to prevail for Abubakar Malami and expect him to be held accountable for his actions during his honorable term.
