Additional information surfaced on Wednesday regarding the attack carried out on Tuesday on the communities of Woro and Nuku in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State by suspected terrorists.
According to The Punch, a close relative of the traditional ruler of Woro, identified as his younger brother, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the assailants stormed the area in the early evening. According to him, the attackers arrived on motorcycles and positioned themselves around the communities before launching the assault.
He explained that the manner of the attack effectively cut off escape routes, as gunfire was reportedly directed toward the communities from multiple directions, leaving residents with little opportunity to flee.
Umar explained, “The residents who attempted to flee were shot, while those who surrendered were gathered at the palace of the village head, where they were tied up and shot.”
He disclosed that several members of the traditional ruler’s family were among those taken during the attack, including the ruler’s wife, his mother, and three of his children, leaving five members of the household unaccounted for.
The attack reportedly caused widespread panic in the community, with many residents fleeing their homes and leaving the town largely deserted. He emphasised the urgent need for an increased security presence to restore confidence and enable displaced residents to return.
According to him, prior intelligence had indicated the possibility of an attack, and this information had been communicated to local government authorities and relayed to higher levels of government. He added that a contingent of soldiers had patrolled the area earlier on the day of the assault, which initially appeared to deter the attackers.
