The Federal Government’s recent decision to grant clemency to Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has continued to provoke widespread discussion across the nation.

Reports by The Sun indicate that the debate has extended beyond the pardon itself, with the removal of Igboho’s name from the official wanted list reigniting conversations about justice, fairness, and persistent concerns over perceived bias in how President Bola Tinubu’s administration handles separatist movements.

Igboho, a prominent advocate for the Oduduwa Republic, was previously linked to allegations of terrorism following a high-profile security raid on his Ibadan residence in 2021. The operation, which drew national attention, ultimately forced him into exile.

Dr. Bitrus Pogu, president of the Middle Belt Forum, while reacting highlighted what he described as inconsistencies in the country’s administration of justice. He noted that treatment often varies depending on one’s background, a recurring pattern that, in his view, has become entrenched in Nigeria’s political and legal landscape.

He further argued that if Sunday Igboho has been granted freedom, the same consideration should extend to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Beyond that, he contended, individuals from smaller communities who have been detained for defending their people should also be released, particularly given that many of the actual perpetrators of violence remain at large, with their locations reportedly known to the authorities.

He also stated, “Thank God because of the pressure from the United States, and having the right people in the defence hierarchy, the insurgents are now not finding it easy, but the sponsors are still out there, people who think that some non-kinetic methodology can be used to solve the problems of people who are fighting an ideological war, and unleashing terror on people.

“So, the issue now, is that, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. If Sunday Igboho should be set free, Nnamdi Kanu should also be set free.”

He further emphasized that those who have been detained for defending their communities—like the individual in Kaduna—deserve fair treatment and, where appropriate, release.

He argued that self-defence is a fundamental right guaranteed by the constitution. However, he warned that when regulations are applied unevenly to favor particular groups or regions, it risks creating a cycle of perceived injustice.

According to him, such selective enforcement could fuel greater tensions and violent confrontations in the future, a situation that should be avoided to preserve social harmony.
