Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yosef Lauds ‘Miracle’ Of Ran Gvili’s Body Returning ‘intact’ From Gaza

According to a report by The Times of Israel, Sephardic Chief Rabbi David Yosef eulogized Ran Gvili, praising what he described as a “miracle” in the return of his body from Gaza intact.

Speaking during the eulogy, Yosef compared Gvili’s struggle and that of the Israeli nation on October 7, 2023, to the rebellion led by Jewish leader Simon Bar Kochba against the Roman Empire in the second century.

Referring to a legend from the Bar Kochba revolt, which holds that the bodies of Jewish rebels did not rot despite Roman authorities preventing their burial, Yosef said a similar occurrence took place on Monday. He noted that Ran “returned intact, whole of body,” framing it as a continuation of a historical tradition of divine protection.

During the eulogy, Yosef addressed the broader issue of antisemitism worldwide. “God loves us, but the other nations, not so much,” he said. “We’re dealing with antisemitism — we who created, we who want to survive, to live, but the world blames us even though we want to defend ourselves. We have no solution to this antisemitism, but we have to fight it and have to know that they hate us because we’re Jews.”

The chief rabbi emphasized the importance of Jewish pride and identity. He encouraged the community to recognize that they are “the chosen people of God” and to remain proud as God’s nation.

Yosef also reflected on recent events affecting the Jewish people, including the attacks on October 7 and the Hanukkah massacre at Bondi Beach in Australia. He said these incidents demonstrate that the Jewish nation remains united and that “we still love one another.”

In his eulogy, Yosef called upon Israelis to support bereaved families and orphans affected by recent violence, urging citizens to “hold them up and support them.” He noted the impact of the Gvili family, stating, “You, the Gvili family, united all of Israel around you.”
