We Went To Forest, Bandits Told Us Their Fight Was Not With Soldiers But With Yan Sakai – Usman Yusuf
Professor Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, has spoken about the issue of banditry. He stated that the solution to banditry involves both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches
In an interview with Daily Trust TV, Prof Usman shared an experience from five years ago when he and his team visited nine states affected by banditry, including Zamfara. He said they ventured deep into the forests to understand the situation better and what they found was that bandits did not see the military or the government as their primary adversaries. He said their main conflict was with local vigilante groups known as Yan Sakai.
Professor Yusuf pointed out that since then, the situation has worsened and the conflict has escalated. He stressed that resolving the issue requires addressing the underlying problems and conflicts, not just relying on military force
