The Way Our People Are Moving Around With Cattle Is Not Sustainable, Let’s Address Root Cause – Baba Ngelzarma
The Daily Trust report reveals that Baba Ngelzarma, the National President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, has criticized a clause in a proposed bill aimed at relocating herders to their states of origin. Ngelzarma argues that this provision contradicts the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life for all citizens.
Ngelzarma expressed deep concern over what he perceives as unfair treatment and displacement of herders across various states. He acknowledged the unsustainable nature of current cattle movement practices in Nigeria.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the underlying issues that lead to the conflict. Ngelzarma suggested that solutions should include the revitalization of grazing reserves and cattle routes to create a more sustainable and peaceful environment for herders.
He said, “Our people would be chased out from many states without a just cause. It is wrong to say that herders should be relocated to their states of origin. That clause is a recipe for anarchy. It is an affront on the Nigerian Constitution which guarantees life. Of course, we know that the way our people are moving around with cattle is not sustainable. But we have to address the root cause. We have to talk about revitalising the grazing reserves and cattle routes….Séé Moré
