Residents of Kano State are reeling from the aftermath of a violent hunger protest that rocked the state earlier this week. The protest resulted in loss of life, property, and livelihoods, leaving many to mourn and count their losses.
Family members of the deceased are grieving the loss of their loved ones, while traders and businesses are lamenting the massive financial losses they incurred during the mayhem. Many are calling on the government to provide assistance, as their businesses have been severely impacted.
Aisha Isah Baba, mother of 19-year-old Abdulkadir Labaran Babah Alfindiki, who was killed during the protest, shared her heartbreaking story. Her son had left for work but never returned, and she only learned of his death when his uncle brought his corpse home.
As reported by The Nigerian Tribune, the mother of the deceased said, “My son left home a few minutes after 10 a.m. with the intention to go to his place of work only for me to learn later that he was killed. No one informed me that he had died until when his uncle went to the hospital and brought the corpse.”
Another teenager, Umar Abubakar Hausawa, was also killed during the protest while trying to protect his younger brothers. His brother, Rabiu Abubakar, revealed that Umar was not part of the protest but was trying to withdraw his siblings from the crowd when he was fatally injured.
