LGs Allocation: Atiku Abubakar Reacts After Court, Under Tinubu’s Govt Bars Govs From Holding LG Fund
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent decision affirming fiscal autonomy for local government councils in Nigeria. In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account, Atiku described the judgment as a significant victory for the Nigerian people and a crucial step towards enhancing national development.
“The judgment of the Supreme Court earlier today affirming fiscal autonomy to local government councils in the country is a win for the people of Nigeria,” Atiku stated. He emphasized that the ruling is a corrective measure aimed at improving governance and ensuring that local governments serve as vital centers of development.
Atiku criticized the previous practice where revenues of local councils were consolidated into state government accounts, describing it as a politically motivated compromise. He expressed agreement with the Supreme Court’s view that local governments, as one of the three tiers of government in Nigeria, deserve autonomy in managing their finances.
The former vice president went further, advocating for broader fiscal independence: “I also share the belief that fiscal autonomy to the local governments should not be limited to revenues from the Federation Accounts, but indeed, should apply to Internally Generated Revenue from the respective local government authorities.” He acknowledged the challenges faced by local councils in generating revenue independently, particularly in urban areas with high economic activity.
Atiku endorsed the Supreme Court’s role as an arbitration court, noting that the verdict aligns with its mandate to resolve disputes among government entities. He expressed optimism that the ruling would empower local governments to fulfill their responsibilities effectively, including infrastructure development and service delivery…..See_More
