LG Autonomy: Governor Seyi Makinde Labels Supreme Court Ruling On LG Autonomy As A Distraction
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has described the recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments as a distraction from more pressing national issues, POLITICS NIGERIA reported.
In a video released on Saturday, Governor Makinde underscored the need for Nigeria to focus on addressing deeper systemic problems such as productivity, hunger, and widespread anger among the populace.
“The judgment of the Supreme Court, there is local government autonomy, financial autonomy, and all of that, and I will still say it, I think it’s just a distraction. We must face the real issues that we have.
“The issue that we have is that we are not producing enough. We are not productive,” Makinde stated.
The Supreme Court’s landmark decision, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, affirmed the constitutional right of Nigeria’s 774 local government councils to manage their finances independently, free from state government interference.
The judgment mandates that local government allocations be paid directly to the councils, thereby eliminating the practice of state governments controlling these funds.
