Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Dr. Ladan Salihu recently told Arise News that constitutional reform should wait until the urgent problems in Northern Nigeria are resolved.
The region is facing serious issues, he stressed, and they need immediate action. Southern states like Lagos, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt have much better living circumstances than northern states like Sokoto, Zamfara, Maiduguri, Kebbi, and Yobe, as pointed out by Dr. Salihu.
As he put it, Nigeria is “one country, two systems,” and the North must “catch its breath” and fix its issues before talks of constitutional revision can begin. While praising organizations like The Patriots for their work towards a new constitution, the PDP chairman emphasized the need to give top priority to the problems facing the North.
He implied that the area will be in a better position to have fruitful conversations on constitutional reform after these problems are resolved. Put simply by him; Nigeria is a country with two distinct systems. Your route begins in Sokoto and continues through Zamfara, Maiduguri, Kebbi, and Yobe before ending in Lagos, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt.
Two completely different cultures coexist in the same nation, and all we’re trying to convey is that the North needs a break. It is imperative that these issues be addressed.
