20,000 Children Are Born Daily In Nigeria, If That Figure Is Accurate, It’s A Scary One – Audu Ogbeh

Chief Audu Ogbeh, the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has expressed concerns about the high rate of childbirth in Nigeria. He estimates that 20,000 children are born daily in the country, highlighting the societal challenges resulting from such rapid population growth.

Ogbeh emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that this daily increase amounts to 6 million newborns each month. He underscored the pressure this puts on families, especially in areas where traditional practices conflict with economic constraints.

The former minister pointed out cases where individuals, adhering to customs, burden themselves with large families they struggle to support adequately. This often leads to women shouldering the childcare responsibilities, causing significant stress and sometimes resulting in the adoption of unhealthy coping mechanisms like drug use.

In an interview with The Sun, Ogbeh said,

“The figure I have now, I don’t know how accurate it is, is that 20,000 children are born daily in Nigeria now. That is 6,000,000 a month. Six million babies a month. If that figure is accurate, it is a scary one, especially in certain parts of the country where your security guard tells you he still wants to marry four wives and every month, you are helping him with school fees, and food and so on, but he says his religion says he can marry four wives.
